Extended Range Antennas

Hi all,

Can anyone suggest any sources of information regarding amplifiers & extended range antennas please?

There are commercially available "long range" systems, so this has got me curious.

Thanks,

David.

Re: Extended Range Antennas

"Long range" in the 125kHz spectrum usually means close to 1 meter read range for ISO sized tags.

Could you give examples of hardware that claims to support longer read ranges?

Because of the low frequency (and thus long wave length of 2.4km) readers and tags in the 125kHz are normally magnetically coupled and doesn't use RF waves. (That is, they are coupled with an attenuating wave as opposed to a propagating wave). This causes the reader field to decrease with 1/r^3 where 'r' is the distance from the reader.

Microchip AN678 discusses 125kHz tags and the formulas involved when calculating expected read ranges.
